Computer Aided Fashion Design

Course objectives

Upon completion of this course, student will learn the fundamental and advanced techniques specific to fashion design using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

•  Adobe Photoshop: student focus on sketching, color stories, line planning, silhouette, and fabric design in order to establish fashion design principles through digital line design development techniques.

•  Adobe Illustrator: Aspects of drawing flats and garment details and working with images and color are addressed. Students also build fabric and trim libraries and create stitch effects and/or repeat prints.

•  Student should be able to design and complete a “Professional Portfolio” upon course completion.

Outline

Module 1: Getting Started with Photoshop and Illustrator

•  Selection, Transform, Color and Crop Image.

•  Painting, Cloning and Photo Retouching.

•  Templates, Layers, and Sublayers.

•  Work with Type Tools: Create, Import, Link, Copy Type and Warp Text Techniques.

•  Use Pen Tool to create Multiple Fashion Flats.

•  Multiple Brushes, Swatches and Pantone colors.

•  Work with Reflect, Blend and Pathfinder Tools.

Module 2: Study Photoshop and Illustrator Intermediate Level

•  Create Gradients, Filters, and Effects.

•  Create Even Stripe, Uneven Stripe and Stripes Variations.

•  Plain Weave Plaids and Twill Weave (Thick Twill) Plaids.

•  Swatches Align and Pinked Edge Swatches.

•  Use New Color Replacement Tool for Design.

•  Create Group of Flats with Trendy Colors and Patterns.

•  Straight Match Repeat and Half-Drop Repeat.

Module 3: Study Photoshop and Illustrator Advanced Tools (Fashion Prints Drawing Skills Studies)

•  Pattern Maker, Liquify, Compound Path, and Clipping Mask etc.

•  Create Personal Stitch Library and Swatch Library.

•  Design Stitch Embroidery, Floral Embroidery and Apply to Flats.

•  Use Action to Save Design Procedure.

•  Create 3D Model and Prints and Fill in Skin.

•  Evenly Paced Flower Design and Layout.

•  Multiple Repeats Techniques for Prints.

Module 4: Study Photoshop and Illustrator Advanced Skills (Further Studies on Prints Design)

•  Floral Prints Design Combining with Inner Glow, Gradient etc.

•  Prints Clean-Up and Colorways Application.

•  Displacement Techniques and Garment Wrap.

•  Apply to Garments and Lace Cleaning-Up.

•  Knits, Denim and Animal Print Simulations

•  Accessories Design (Buttons, Sequins, Buckles etc)

•  Use New 3D Tool for Logo and Image Creation.

Module 5: Portfolio Project Seminar

•  Creating a Concept Board

•  Introduction to Fashion Forecasting and Market Structure.

•  Choose a Fashion Market and Select inspirations.

•  Work with Advanced Type Tool, and Compound Path Techniques.

•  Creating Color Story Page

•  Introduction to Color Theory and New Trend Colors.

•  Design Fancy Images and Border to Reflect Chosen Colors.

•  Knits Wear Design Creation

•  Jersey, Purl Stitches and Cable Design

•  Sweater, Cardigan, Vest etc. Knits Silhouettes Creation.

•  Create and Organize a Group of Flats Drawing

•  A group of Flats with Colorways.

•  Fill Plaids, Knits Pattern and Prints into Flats.

•  Advanced Flats Skill such as Mesh Lining, Multiple Zippers etc.

•  3D Model Drawing for Portfolio

•  Hand-drawing Techniques combining with computer skills.

•  Create 3D Color Models for the Project

•  Learn Illustrator 3D new techniques to Drawing.

•  Overview of the course.
